How Full is Your Bucket?
Working
and playing with others is a life skill that everyone uses and we all know that
sometimes dealing with others can be a bit tricky! While working to build a
positive classroom climate, Lester Prairie first graders have class meetings to
focus on ways to work together without problems. Students have practiced giving compliments to
each other in a kindness circle, thought of ways to make others feel welcome,
and role played ways to handle various situations. The book, How Full Is
Your Bucket? For Kids, provided excellent examples for discussion about how
what we say and do affects others. The
premise of the book is that everyone has an imaginary bucket. It noted that we can add drops to fill other
people’s bucket (make them feel good) or drain from it (hurt their
feelings). We’ve learned that how we
react to what others say or do is very important and when we do something that
adds a drop to other’s buckets, it also adds to our own bucket! So when you hear first graders saying, “My
bucket is full today!” you’ll know that they’re having a wonderful day. By staying positive and spreading happiness,
our buckets will never be empty!
